Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator who believed that because the Earth was round, he could find a westward sea route to India from Europe. This would allow them to trade directly with India and participate in the Indian Ocean trade. Unable to gain funding from Italy, Columbus went to Spain, where his expedition was funded by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. On his first voyage, Columbus “discovered” the Caribbean/North America, which was important because the discovery of the Americas would soon result in riches for European colonizers. (4.1)
