Bartolomeu Dias was a Portuguese explorer who travelled to the Indian Ocean in 1488. He was the first European explorer who travelled around the Cape of Good Hope. This was important because his journey opened a new trade route from Europe to Asia, and also inspired Christopher Columbus to find a westward sea route. (4.1)
