Once again, something that people love comes straight from the nightshades. Thought to be cultivated in its native Americas as far back as 6000 BC, for much the same utility as it is today, by those living there. Indeed, the natives in Cuba were seen smoking their form of cigars by Columbus when he arrived. Subsequently brought back to Spain from its homeland, prepared tobacco eventually made its way to Portugal and into the hands of one ambassador named Jean Nicot, who in 1560 began exporting to England and his home of France. It’s for this man that the genus Nicotiana, and by proxy, nicotine, are named. A stalk-based plant one or two feet tall, tobacco is ordinarily prevented from growing anything but leaves, with the entire top of the plant hacked off, so as to optimize how much “useful” material is created. Despite being a natural perennial, tobacco is grown annually to satisfy demand. Indeed, an ounce of seed over 100 square yards can get an effective yield thousands of times greater.
