(Established this year by Sotho chief Moshoeshoe I, the Kingdom of Lesotho emerged in response to the rise of the Zulu to the east. It remained steadfastly independent, weathering colonization attempts by both the British and the Dutch. It finally became a British protectorate in 1868.)
