(On this day, Haiti declared its independence from France after a long, bloody slave revolt. The first Empire of Haiti was the first nation in the world to achieve independence through a slave revolt, and was the first nation to permanently abolish slavery. While Haiti experimented with different forms of government, France extorted large sums of money from it in exchange for recognition of its independence, setting the precedent for Haitian financial struggles.)
