On this day, Costa Rica formally split from the Federal Republic of Central America. Costa Rica had already begun to enjoy autonomy within the increasingly ceremonial FRCA, but this proclamation of independence made things official. Costa Rica has enjoyed greater stability and peace than much of Central America, and today has a high standard of living.
