On this day, less than a month after Laos, Cambodia also formally declared independence from France. Parts of Cambodia were invaded by North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and subsequently bombed by the US. Things quickly went downhill from there as the US attempted to meddle in Cambodian politics, the Khmer Rouge (the militaristic communist party of the country) took power, and the Khmer Rouge enacted a genocide on Cambodia during the late '70s.
