When Germany suddenly started being a democracy in 1919 it was fighting against a traditions going back hundreds of years. Germany since its unification under Bismarck had always been run by authoritarian Kaisers,
state leaders and a proud military. For many Germans democracy simply wasn’t in their vocabulary and viewed it as weak, effeminate and a way in which the weak and decadent could seize control of the country.
