World War I began after the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist group. Various treaties and alliances led to two opposing sides: the Allies (United Kingdom, France, Italy, the United States, and Russia) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria).
