Because the attack on Ammonihah was unexpected it took some time for the Nephites to marshal an army to drive the Lamanites out.

When the army was finally formed it was led by a man named Zoram. While it seems obvious that this man was a righteous man, nothing is really known about him.
His two sons, Lehi and Aha, served as captains under him.

Now, many had been taken captive by the Lamanites and the Nephites were anxious to rescue them. Zoram and his sons all knew Alma to be a prophet, and so they went to him to enquire of the Lord, and Alma told them to engage the Lamanites in the Land of Manti.
Zoram led the armies, they scattered and drove the Lamanites from the land, and freed all those who had been taken captive (not one captive was lost).
