Again the people pressed King Limhi to let them attempt to fight their way to freedom. For the third time they were driven back.
After this third assault there was a great lack of men among the people of Zeniff, as most of them had been killed in the three assaults.

I believe that Limhi sent the expedition to find Zarahemla partly to pacify those who wanted to fight. He convinced them to back down until the expedition returned.
When the expedition failed to find Zarahemla he consented to the third assault.
