Spain's harsh treatment towards Cuba started a war between the two nations. Though the war was isolated, the U.S. didn't enter the fray until the U.S. intercepted a letter from Spain's U.S. ambassador saying that the president of the U.S. wasn't strong enough to intervene in Cuba. Also, when the U.S. naval ship USS Maine exploded while off the coast of Cuba, less than a week later, the U.S. decided to join the war on April 21, 1898 and fight with the Cubans against the Spanish. President McKinley presented the war as a necessary humanitarian intervention for Cuba. The Spanish-American War would help America become a world power in addition to the economic power it would have as a result of the industrial revolution.
