The War of 1812 happened during the presidency of James Madison between British and American forces. The major conflict was that Britain was fighting a war against France in Europe and America wished to stay neutral in this war. The British and refused to recognize American neutrality and would not trade with the Americans. There were also conflicts in the West between Americans and Indians, which the British supposedly encouraged in order to halt westward expansion in America. These things led to the War of 1812. The war lasted 3 years and saw major victories for American generals like Andrew Jackson. The American forces defeated the British and effectively removed Indian resistance in the West. It was a major victory for the Americans.
