The Reform Movement members had a in interest in developing principles for language teaching out of naturalistic principles of language learning, such as are seen in the first language acquisition, this led to the development of the Direct Method.
He and other believers argued that a foreign language could be taught without translation or the use of the learners native language if meaning was conveyed directly through demonstration and action.

Direct Method was introduced in France and Germany and gain popularity in the United States trough the use of it by Sauveur and Maximilian Berlitz in sucessful commercial language schools.

It stood for :
1 Classroom instruction was exclusively in the target language
2 Only everyday language was taught
3 Oral skills were built up carefully organzied in a question-answer exchanges between teachers and students
4 Grammar was taught inductively
5 Net teaching points were introduced orally
6 Concrete vocabulary was taught trough demonstration objects and pictures.
7 Listening and speech comprehension were taught
8 Correct Pronunciation and grammar were emphasized
