Ngo Dinh Diem was the South Vietnamese prime minister, he was elected in 1954. He was the leader of the catholic element and was despised by buddhists. On the second of Nov., 1963, Diem was assassinated by Nguyễn Văn Nhung completing a coup d’etat backed by the CIA.
