Khe Sanh was a fortress in every sense of the word as it was garrisoned by marines and was equipped with artillery,tanks, and was surrounded by landmines and other explosives. Khe Sanh was a staging point to attack the Ho Chi Minh trail, a trail that ran through neutral Cambodia and connected the North with the South and was used to carry resources to the South to supply the VC.
The NVA and VC would attack the base and use it was distraction to send resources down the trail in greater numbers in preparation of the Tet Offensive..
