after already snatching the first to space stepping stone the Soviets go for second to space too. plus, to top it off they even send a living dog to orbit. Laika became the first ever living thing sent into space, thus scoring another grand victory for the Soviet Union. Laika's purpose was to see if space travel was safe for humans, however no technology advanced enough to make a safe return existed. meaning Laika was destined to perish. Sputnik II was a four meter tall cone with a base diameter of two meters and was launched on a Sapwood SS-6 8K71PS. Sputnik II was made by Energia and weighed over 1000 pounds.
