Louis XVI had been arrested after he was deposed and a republic declared. Humiliated as "Citizen Louis Capet", he tried for "treason" and found guilty. After a short speech where he pardoned his executioners and declared himself innocent, he was beheaded by guillotine in the Place de la Révolution.
