1. What is it?
This was a campaign created in the summer of 1964 to register more African American voters in Mississippi.

2. When did it happen?
June-August 1964

3. Who was involved?
- Council of Federated Organizations (COFO)- a coalition of civil rights groups that organized the campaign. COFO was made up of the Mississippi branches of SNCC, CORE, NAACP, and SCLC.
- Robert Parris Moses- co-director of the COFO who directed the campaign
- Groups against the campaign included the state and local government, the police, the White Citizens' Council, and the KKK.

Mississippi

5. One major cause
Prior to 1964, the percentage of African Americans registered to vote in Mississippi was incredibly low. In 1962 only 5.3% of African Americans were registered. Because of this, civil rights groups felt that something had to be done in Mississippi to increase voter registration.

6. One major effect
The Freedom Summer helped result in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This act bans racial discrimination in voting.
