Adelaide Hills, wife of Hat Factory owner Henry Hills, was a neighbor of the Dickisons whenever she summered with her husband in their Amherst home. She frequently corresponded with Emily from at least 1871 to 1884. The women exchanged flowers, recipes, and treats, along with well-wishes and condolences, and Emily’s short notes often take on a poetic form. In the letter quoted above (JL 376), Dickinson embeds a recipe for a chocolate dessert. They didn’t talk manufacturing business in their letters, at least, but their relationship indicates an understanding of relatively equal social status and mutual fondness.
