Dred Scott, a slave from Missouri living in Illinois, sued Missouri for his freedom. He believed that living in Illinois ( a free state) made him a free man. He lost, and so he brought the suit to the federal court.

The court ruled that Americans of African descent were not citizens and could not sue the federal court. This decision caused Southerners to become more emboldened in their campaign to spread slavery throughout the rest of the country.
