Taoism, a religion based upon the writings of Laozi, had become the popular religion in China. Li Yuan, who was the founder of the dynasty, had descent from Laozi, so he influenced others to become a part of the religion. This forced those who were Buddhist or Confucianist to try to re-popularize the religion and allowed for a new world religion to be added into the mix. Taoism was also incorporated into other religions.
