Jiang Zemin rose to power shortly after the Tiananmen Square protests and remained in power until 2002. He replaced Zhao Ziyang as the head of the Communist Party after ZIyang showed support for the demonstrators at Tiananmen Square. During his administration, Zemin oversaw the handover of Hong Kong in 1997.
