It was made to separate seeds from cotton. It was created by Eli Whitney. He began to work on his project after moving to Georgia in search of work. He created two cotton gins, a small one that could hand-cranked and a large one that could be driven by a horse or water power. It dramatically the amount of time it took to separate seeds from cotton fibers.
