The WTO's TRIPS agreement, negotiated during the 1986-94 Uruguay Round, introduced intellectual property rules into the multilateral trading system for the first time. The inclusion of intellectual property protections into the WTO's rules demonstrated the changing in the ideas of trade and the development of technology under the influence of globalization. The goals and duties of the WTO had to adapt to these rapid changes.
