On January 9, 1776, Thomas Paine, an enlightened thinker, released his own pamphlet, Common Sense convincing the people to support the idea of independence. Paine definitely wasn’t the first to release a pamphlet stating that the colonies need to demand their independence and that they need to break away from Great Britain, but he was the first “common person” to do so. Paine wrote in a style that was easy to understand, whereas “most pamphlets of the time were written by lawyers in a style that only well-educated people could understand.” Thomas Paine reached a wider audience, resulting in a bigger change.
