Fela Kuti was first imprisoned in 1974 for 8 days. It was after this moment that he was able to truly form his consciousness and present it in the music we know today. The incident allowed him to formulate a critique of the state and police/military brutality. This became an important part of his discourse, as it was not the last time he was arrested and imprisoned. From these experiences with the police and military we get songs like "Expensive Shit" (1975), "Zombie" (1976), and "Unknown Soldier" (1981).
