Tyson met Carl Sagan for the first time when he was 17 in 1975. He got into Cornell University, and after reading his application form, Sagan invited the teen to tour his lab. Afterward, it was snowing really hard outside, and while driving Tyson to the bus stop, he wrote his home phone number on a piece of paper in case the bus couldn't get through the snow. He invited Tyson to stay the night at his home with his family if that were to happen.
This was a major moment for Tyson because, while he already knew he wanted to be a scientist, Sagan taught him what kind of person he wanted to be (Welsh, 2015).
