The Articles of Confederation is the precursor to the the U.S. Constitution, but ultimately failed due to the fact that it gave states significantly more power than the federal government, and caused a secular attitude in the colonies. As states began to create their own trade laws and form their own currency, their identities became pinpointed as Virginian and New Yorker instead of an American. This prompted the creation of the United States Constitution.
