Now, as I finish up this reflection of my journey to understand my sexuality and gender identity, I have a few options. Every day I am faced with having to constantly choose who to come out to. For example, do I tell my boss that I prefer they/them? If I call my girlfriend my "partner", does everyone automatically assume I am a lesbian? Would this ruin a grad school application?
These are things that I will never be able to escape. Things are also a little bit extra complicated for me. This is because I am technically a member of the trans community, which blows peoples' minds. They think that this means I want to transition to be a male, which means I have to constantly explain all of the ways one can be trans. This also makes it extremely complicated to label my sexuality. Because our labels involve needing to know the sex of both parties, I am not very comfortable using them. People assume I am a lesbian. However, I generally just say "queer", which both simplifies and complicates things, in different ways. This is apparently pretty common for those whose gender identity is not congruent with their sex assigned at birth. According to Bosse and Chiodo, these folks are more likely to use "queer" or "pansexual" (Bosse & Chiodo, 2016). Pansexual just does not fit my identity, which is why queer is more comfortable for me.
