Soon after his tear-fest, the scientists appeared again. Having made up his mind to stay, he attempted to use his new powers to protect the family, but was not used to them, and so was unable to protect the mother, who was killed, along with all three scientists who had shown up at the door (accidentally). Horrified, he ran away, and kept going until he quite literally collapsed from exhaustion in an alleyway in the closest city.
