30 май 1854 г. - Kansas-Nebraska Act (Popular Sovereignty)
Описание:
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a result of the construction of a railroad across the continent. The Act proposed the division of the Nebraska Territory into the Kansas Territory and the Nebraska Territory. Senator Stephen Douglas proposed that residents of these territories would vote on whether slavery would be allowed. The proposition went against the Missouri Compromise because the territories were above the 36° 30' line, thus the Kansas-Nebraska Act would replace the Missouri Compromise.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act is significant because it introduced the idea of popular sovereignty, which is the practice of citizens choosing how their territory/country will operate on specific issues such as slavery. The Kansas-Nebraska Act also gave southerners a chance to gain dominance in territories that were otherwise deemed "free" by the Missouri Compromise. The Act further upset the North and continued to separate the North and the South.
"It is argued that slavery will not go to Kansas and Nebraska, in any event. This is a palliation--a lullaby. I have some hope that it will not; but let us not be too confident."
-Abraham Lincoln
