Poisonous gas was first used when Germany released 160 tons of it which blew over French troops.

Poisonous gas can kill and injure thousands of troops within minutes. Gas was easy to use in the trenches because it wasn't hand to hand combat and you just had to throw a smoke bomb over on the other side.
