Description: Thousands of miners traveled to Northern California after news reports of the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in January of 1848 had spread around the world. This caused Californians to apply for statehood in 1849
Causes: James W. Marshall discovered gold in California, which caused widespread attraction to California since people desired wealth.
Historical Impact: Caused an increasing Chinese population in the United States. This event supported the idea of Manifest Destiny in that large amounts of people were beginning to move westward in order to find gold.
