Description: President Monroe signed the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, which stated that the Eastern and Western Hemispheres should stay separate politically and have as little contact as possible.
Causes: Many Latin American countries were in the process of declaring independence from Spain or Portugal, mimicking the actions of America in the mid/late 18th century.
Impact: The Monroe Doctrine highlighted a new age in foreign policy for the United States, one that was much more grounded in the Western Hemisphere than globally.
