"A communications satellite is an artificial satellite that relays and amplifies radio telecommunications signals via a transponder; it creates a communication channel between a source transmitter and a receiver at different locations on Earth." Because Telstar 1 was the first of these, it let to some pretty amazing things. We were able to send signals to other parts of the world through space. We still use this a lot today.
