Germany was going to attack France through Belgium while Russia was taking their time to mobilize their troops for Germany. The plan failed because Belgium troops were stronger than expected, British troops also helped Belgium to fight of Germany, and Russia's troops were mobilized sooner than expected.

If the Schlieffen Plan had been executed then their possibly would have only be one front that Germany and Russia would have to fight in rather than two fronts.
