Sometime in 1848, the Free Soil Party is founded. Its ideology was based mostly around abolitionism, specifically the advocation against the expansion of slavery into the new territory gained in the Mexican Cession. Former Democratic president Martin van Buren ran under the party in 1848, but lost to Whig Zachary Taylor. They never managed to get a president elected but had several men in Congress. They dissolved after 1852.
