Prior to Federation, Australia lived as separate colonies.

There were many advantages to federating; economic advantages, national defense force, strengthening of communication etc.

Disadvantages: Australian colonies were situated far apart from each other, small colonies feared that Federation would allow larger colonies to dominate, fear of losing power etc.
