Benjamin Rush is known as the father of American psychiatry. He encouraged good treatment of the patients. Wrote the first systematic treatise on psychiatry in America (Medical Inquiries and Observations upon Diseases of the Mind). First American to design a house about psychiatry. Invented a device called the tranquilizing chair. Lasted till 1813
