This discussion and analysis of Kendrick Lamar's work has shown that his lyrics and visuals seek to inspire previous connections in his audience. One of the most well-known and studied body of work is the Bible. By using references that already have certain connotations, Lamar is free to comment on them and their influence on pop culture. Whether used directly or in a satire, Lamar elevates his work to walk the border and question the line between pop culture and higher forms of art. His work is accessible to various levels of education and background and never seeks to condescend his listeners. All of this makes him and his work a notable study of the influence of the bible on pop culture.
Because of this approach to the Bible, Kendrick is essentially creating his own theological analysis of Christianity. The Gordon Lynch book "Understanding Theology and Popular Culture" defines theology as this:
"Theology is the process of seeking normative answers to questions of truth/meaning, goodness/practice, evil, suffering, redemption, and beauty in specific contexts" (Lynch, pg. 94).
Kendrick is doing just this. He introduces us to real world problems like temptation and addiction and attempts to "seek" for "normative" answers for all these issues within the "specific context" of Christianity. Occasionally, he finds the answers within the context of the Black Hebrew Israelites belief structure as well, but he generally presents his own questions in his lyrics by very directly paraphrasing the Bible.
Kendrick Lamar is not just changing rap, he is changing how religious text is used in popular culture... a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. As previously stated, his approach to lyric writing has made Christian ideals more universal, and more accessible than ever before. Kendrick Lamar's massive influence has gotten him invitations to the white house, put him on the Grammys stage, and made him a central figure of modern culture. At only five years into his career, the whole world is hanging on to Kendrick's every word.
