Charles V was the most powerful Habsburg of any that had ever lived, controlling Spain, most of Italy, Austria, the Low Countries, the Holy Roman Empire, and more, virtually giving birth to the term ‘universal monarchy’. He was also a deeply religious and pious man who tried, in vain, to put an end to the Reformation that was born out of his Empire. He is more prominent than his grandfather, Maximilian I, because Maximilian spent to much of his time securing the crowns that Charles V would actually get to wear and internationally influence other countries and leave his mark on his kingdoms of Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and more.
