Charles V abdicated the thrones of the Holy Roman Empire and Spain, leaving a large power vacuum. This was taken by his son Philip II in Spain where he eventually gained control of Portugal and America as well. The HRE and Austria was taken by his brother Ferdinand and this represented a massive split in the power of the Habsburgs. (Palmer 121)
