After the death of King Henry IV, his son Louis XIII became the new king. Louis was extremely weak and to make up for this, he appointed Cardinal Richelieu as the new leader of France. Prior to Richelieu’s leadership, he was the leader of the catholic church in France and he was Louis XIII’s minister, which allowed him to pursue his political ambitions. During his reign he tried to increase the power of the Bourbon monarchy in two different ways. The first way was he moved the Huguenots due to their Protestantism beliefs and their conspiracies against the Catholic king. The second way was he weakened the noble’s power by forcing them to tear down their fortified castles and increased the power in the middle class government. Richelieu eventually led France to the Thirty Years’ War in search of power.
