In January of 1807, the northern states wanted to vote to end African Slave trade as it was not a great part of the economy anymore. Southern congressmen also knew that their massive slave population was self sustaining so they no longer needed the African slave trade so it was ended in 1807. This was a very important event in history because it marks the first time the US did something that was against the institution of slavery which then set the stage for later movements pushing to abolish slavery all together.
