New York recognizes marriage within the African American community. They were able to get married and so this a was a big step for them because of slavery being ban and the changes of African Americans becoming free. This goes with American identity because this is about the culture, Africans had a different culture than white people did and did things differently. This helped African Americans do their own thing.
