With the French and the British in an economic standoff, the French turned to the Americans for trade instead of the British. This shift in the banning of French trade with Britain lead to tension between America and Britain. Anglo-American relations were already tense due to the Revolutionary War and Napoleonic conflicts and this certainly didn’t help very much. In June 1807, a British vessel fired on an American warship and demanded a search of the ship in order to find British deserters. This event is significant because it shows how the British extended their practice of impressment to warships and not only merchant ships anymore. However, Jefferson did not opt for the route of war, but instead an economic one known as the Embargo Act
