The Babylonians conquering of the Jews changed their culture drastically. Thousands of Jews were taken away from their homeland. It then became very difficult for them to continue following their religious schedules. However, the Jewish prophets at the time encouraged the Jews to continue studying. It took about 50 years for the Jews to be allowed to go home. But, many groups of Jews decided to stay where they were or move somewhere new. These groups are called the Diaspora. They moved to places such as Egypt, Turkey, Mesopotamia, Iran, and Central Asia. This move changed how Jews worship. It was very difficult back then to return to Jerusalem to worship. So, the use of synagogues to study the Scriptures became more prominent, and people who knew a lot about them became rabbis.
