The Republican Party, otherwise known as the Grand Old Party or GOP, was formed in response to the Kansas-Nebraska Act to oppose the spread of slavery. Notably, Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president. Today, the party makes up the other half of the two party system and stands for conservative ideals.
