The Austro-Hungarian empire retaliated to Serbia after finding out the deaths of Archduke Franz and his wife, Sophie. In the same year, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This bought alliance systems into play. Russia, being a supporter of the pan-Slav state, declared war on Austria-Hungary.
